Competing at the British Championships (Olympic Selection Trials - March 2012) at the Aquatics Centre, London by Rebecca Barsby - KSC Volunteer.

I've attached some photo's from the trials - of me the pool and the stadium.
First a little bit about myself - I started swimming at Kimberley at 5yrs and then started on Nova Development Squad at 10, after attending a trial. A few weeks after that I did my first Counties -compared to some I was probably a late starter, (my brother Ben would certainly say that).
At 11 I qualified for my first Regional Championships and moved on to Nova B Squad. From then over the years I have qualified for the Regional Championships in all strokes at all distances, although my best and preferred events have been breaststroke and the individual medley. At 14, having qualified for the Nationals I moved onto Nova A squad which is where I still train.
Since 14 I have qualified and competed at both Youth and Senior National level in the breast stroke events - 50m, 100m & 200m, the 200m and 400m individual medley and last year I also qualified and competed in the 200m fly.
This year my initial goal was to qualify to compete at the British Champs, which I did in the 200m breast stroke, narrowly missing the 100m long course qualifying time of 1.12.75 (Pb 1.13.18 long).
After all the hard training, 9/10 sessions per week, before and after school and now my Uni course, doing between 55,000 and 70,000 metres a week, plus gym sessions, I was going to compete in the Olympic pool.
Walking out onto the poolside, in my Olympic trials tracksuit, I was nervous, (which is usual) but pleased as it's not everyday you can say 'I competed at the Olympic trials'
The pool was magnificent, especially when I was racing. The atmosphere was fantastic and everyone found themselves cheering and sitting on the edge of their seats for every event. It was fantastic to see so many swimmers qualifying for the Olympics. To see them perform, was amazing. Overall it was just an amazing experience.
Hopefully in the years to come lots of our local swimmers will be competing at Nationals and the British Championships, if they keep up the hard training.

World Record Swim - update

A big thank you to everyone that helped with the Swimarathon on Saturday 25th February at John Carroll Leisure Centre.

The result was a doubling of the world record from 2533 to 5224 swimmers at the latest count. Our event organised by Nottingham Rotary had 50 swimmers and £139.45 was raised for the End Polio Now campaign.

100 metres while challenging for some was certainly not for the swimming clubs and we hope to have a more challenging event for you next year. Next year’s date for the Rotary Global Swimarathon has been set as the 23rd February 2013 at 12 noon

Some pictures are attached and you can see some of this year’s results at http://rotaryglobalswimarathon.org/

Regards

James

County Championships 3rd/4th March 2012

A long weekend of swimming at Mansfield saw the final two days of this years county championships.

On Saturday the swimmers swam 32 p.b times from 40 individual events with Mollie Wright winning the girls 400m Freestyle event and Matthew Shipley achieving first place in the 9/10yr old boys 50m Freestyle.

On Sunday, Mollie came runners up in the girls 13yr old 200m Free and Matthew picked up a second place medal for the 9/10yr 50m Backstroke. Excellent p.bs were gained by the majority of the swimmers.

In the multi disability events Jacqueline Jenkins Weller won both her events with Emily Anthony coming in second place.

In the BagCat awards Matthew Shipley(10yr) finished in first place ... well done Matt, County Champion :-) Bradley Francis (9yr) finished in 5th, Mollie Wright(13yr) finished in 4th and Ryan Pigott (12yr) finished in 6th place.
Swimmers just outside the top ten were Charly Neilson - 12th place, Elise Yorston 12th place, Eve McG - 11th place and Ellie Knowles - 13th Place.

Over the course of the county championships the swimmers have been a credit to the club and their parents, all constantly cheering and supporting each other. They should ALL be proud of their efforts.

Many thanks to Russ Pigott, Sharon Knowles, Scott Kennerell, Amber Williamson, Lisa Wright and Diane Brown for their help on poolside.
